On 18 May 2025, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) celebrated its 55th anniversary—a symbolic milestone for one of Malaysia’s most iconic higher education institutions. Since its founding in 1970, UKM has become more than just a university; it has served as a pillar of national identity, academic excellence, and social development.
The anniversary was held on the UKM Bangi campus under the theme "Upholding Heritage, Inspiring the Future." It was not just a commemoration of history but a reflection on the university’s contributions and ambitions moving forward. Students, staff, alumni, and guests from across the country came together to mark the day with pride and gratitude.
Decorations filled the campus with vibrant banners, traditional Malaysian motifs, and student volunteers dressed in cultural attire. A parade in the morning set the tone, followed by exhibitions showcasing UKM’s innovations in healthcare, sustainability, digital technology, and social sciences. The atmosphere was festive but reflective, as many were reminded of the university’s legacy and evolving role in shaping national thought and leadership.
One of the highlights of the event was the university history gallery, which traced the growth of UKM over five decades. Panels displayed key milestones in research, alumni achievements, and international partnerships. Visitors walked through a timeline of progress that told a story not only of an institution, but of a nation building itself through education.
Also featured was the story of UKM’s Bangi campus, designed in the 1970s with a student-centred vision. The original plan was to create three core zones—academic areas, residential halls, and other facilities—placed within walking distance of each other. The buildings were connected by covered walkways, ensuring that students could move comfortably across campus regardless of the weather. This design reflected UKM’s early commitment to accessibility and community, values that still shape the campus culture today.
But beyond the exhibits and speeches, it was the people of UKM—especially its students—who brought the celebration to life. Throughout the day, student volunteers guided guests, performed traditional music, and organised cultural booths that showcased Malaysia’s diverse heritage.
Among them was Chen Kaize, a third-year undergraduate who spoke warmly about his pride in being part of UKM. “It’s amazing to think we are standing on 55 years of history,” he said.
For Xiao Yuzhe, who has been studying at UKM for nearly a year, the anniversary celebration offered a sense of belonging, “This is my first time participating in a university-wide cultural event like this,” she said.
Their voices echoed the broader theme of the day: unity in diversity. Wu Jianliang an international student from Indonesia, shared that although he was unfamiliar with UKM’s origins when he first arrived, the anniversary exhibitions gave him a new perspective. “I didn’t know much about UKM’s history before,” he said. “But learning that it was founded to protect national language and identity gave me more respect for the university.”
Olivia Louise, a local student, mentioned that her father had studied at UKM decades ago. “He always talked about how different the campus used to be,” she said. “Being here now makes me feel like I’m part of something bigger than just my own journey.”
Nikma Zaldian reflected on how the university has grown physically while keeping its core purpose. “Even with all the new buildings and global ties, UKM still holds on to its original mission — to serve the people,” he said.
The presence of students from different backgrounds, sharing a common celebration, reflected UKM’s modern identity as a globally oriented yet culturally grounded institution.
As the evening arrived, a musical performance took over the main hall. Traditional instruments mixed with modern rhythms, and a medley of Malaysian songs filled the air. Students, staff, and guests sang along, clapped to the beat, and posed for photos under fairy lights and commemorative banners.
The 55th anniversary of UKM was not merely about looking back; it was about looking forward—about how far the university has come, and how much farther it can go. It was a reminder that education is not just about academics; it is about building relationships, cultivating values, and inspiring leadership.
UKM’s journey from a national project to a globally respected university stands as a testament to what can be achieved when a community is built on knowledge, purpose, and inclusiveness. With each passing year, the legacy grows deeper—and with students like those who shared their stories, its future shines brighter than ever.
