Bangi, 17 May - To promote the spirit of caring for life and selfless dedication, Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia UKM organized the Karnival Hari Palang Merah—Blood Donation event at Pusanika on May 17, attracting many students to participate. This activity lasted for about six hours from nine o 'clock in the morning to four o 'clock in the afternoon. A total of 30 volunteers successfully donated blood, injecting new vitality into the national healthcare system.
On the day of the event, the medical team from Pusat Darah Negara began setting up the venue in the morning, preparing the registration, screening, and donation areas. The organizers had collected information from students interested in donating blood in advance via Google Forms. However, eligibility to donate was ultimately determined through on-site health screenings.
Each student who wished to donate blood should fill out the blood donation registration form on the spot, which includes personal health conditions and past medical history. A professional doctor then conducted basic health checks, including blood pressure measurement, weight, and hemoglobin level assessment.
In total, about 30 individuals passed the screening process and successfully completed their donation. Each donor contributed approximately 450 milliliters of blood, with the donation procedure taking around 10 to 15 minutes. After donating, participants took a short rest and were provided with light refreshments. They also received blood donation cards and thank-you certificates as tokens of appreciation for their contributions.
"This is my first time donating blood. At first, I was a little nervous, but the medical staff were very professional, which made me feel at ease. I feel extremely proud to think that this blood can save lives," said a blood donor from UKM, Salmi in an interview.
There was also a group of enthusiastic volunteers at the event site. They assisted in maintaining order, provided guiding services, and played an important role in publicity and dissemination.
"I feel extremely happy. It's very interesting to work with other volunteers. In this event, I was mainly responsible for publicity and media-related work, such as designing and Posting posters, etc. And I also took photos on the spot to record many meaningful moments and posted them on the social media platform @bsmm_ukm after the event ended. I hope I can play my role. Participating in this blood donation activity is precisely a way for me to give back to the community," said a UKM student from the Committee of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, Atiera in an interview.
This blood donation activity received extensive attention and an enthusiastic response on campus, achieving encouraging results. The on-site atmosphere was warm and orderly, and all the links were smoothly coordinated. Under the leadership of the organizers, the volunteers worked closely with the medical staff to provide a good service experience for the blood donors.
The representative of the organizing unit also shared her original intention and feelings regarding the positive response to the event.
"The original intention of holding this blood donation event is to raise public awareness of the importance of blood donation and let more people know that one donation can save three lives. This event is very meaningful because it helps save lives and brings the community closer together. It shows how people care for and support each other. Meanwhile, we also want to provide students with a simple way to do something truly meaningful. They not only provided assistance to those in need during this blood donation, but also received rapid health checks before the donation. Helping others is also helping oneself," said a leader from the committee of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, Mimha in an interview.
Whether through the professionalism of the medical team, the dedication of volunteers, or the generosity of the donors, the event reflected the strong sense of social responsibility among UKM students.
This blood donation campaign not only saved lives but also inspired the younger generation to contribute to society. It showcased the caring and responsible spirit that defines the UKM campus.
The organizing committee expressed hope that such activities will continue in the future to further promote a culture of blood donation on campus, raise public awareness, and encourage more young people to engage in meaningful social initiatives.
